118 COUNTRIES SIGNED DECLARATION ON WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT
118 WTO member states and observers signed the Joint Declaration on Trade and Women’s Economic Empowerment as a part of the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference in Buenos Aires. The document specifically describes the operating principles of WTO “in terms of eliminating obstacles for economic empowerment of women and increasing their participation in trade”. Actions specified in the Declaration, are to provide large amount of well-paid workplaces for women and, finally, promote global economic growth.
According to Galina Karelova, Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council, “That is the first document in the history of WTO of such kind. It displays women's agenda being filled with actual measures that are considered essential by most of the countries. All that unites us and, of course, will assist accomplishing UN Sustainable Development Goals”.
In Mrs. Karelova’s words, the countries that signed the Declaration are eager to share experience of creating necessary legal conditions alongside with communicating the best practices and programmes empowering women economically both internally and internationally.
She reminded that supporting and developing women entrepreneurship is one of the main lines of action of National Strategy for Women 2017-2022, enacted in Russia. She also highlighted the economic role of women as one of the main topics of discussion for the Second Eurasian Women’s Forum. The events initiated by the Federation Council, which address the development of women entrepreneurship and supporting women’s participation in international trade are among the main ones concerning the arrangement of the Forum.
Concluding her message, Galina Karelova said: “Clear decisions and ideas adopted according to their results will gradually evolve into the actual implementation plan for Russia. They will also become the basis of international cooperation with such leading organisations as UNIDO and World Bank. In fact, together they make the real project that will be presented at the Second Eurasian Women’s Forum. I am sure, that in the course of the upcoming Forum the decisions adopted at WTO Ministerial Conference in Buenos Aires will give impetus to broadening the scope of the project and developing international relations”.
