BRIGITTE MACRON: SPECIAL ROLE OF THE PRESIDENT’S WIFE
“Behind every great man is a great woman”, says a famous English idiom. A bright example to prove that is the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron. According to the President, his wife, Brigitte Macron, is a person who always supports him. Now this woman has a responsible role of being a first lady.
Brigitte Macron contributed much to her husband’s career development. For example, when he was a Minister of Finance and rehearsed his speech before the first meeting, she gave advice, and Emmanuel considered her recommendations. He has always been attentive to his wife’s words. Brigitte’s opinion and help were extremely important to him in any business. Her belief in Emmanuel’s success was his support point.
During the election campaign, she also helped him very much. Emmanuel Macron said that in case of his victory at the presidential election, his wife "will have the role that she always had, she will not be hidden".
After becoming the President, Emmanuel Macron highlighted the necessity to work out an official status of the French first lady and provide her with special functions within the framework of the presidential system. Nevertheless, this law did not come into force. However, in 2017, the President’s official web-site published a transparency charter, according to which Brigitte Macron had a non-paid representational position.
The first lady believes she can do much for the French. She deviated from a tradition of standing behind her husband on state visits and excursions. Brigitte Macron expressed her hope to take on ‘a more meaningful role’ at the Elysee Palace.
Few people know that Brigitte Macron started her activity in politics long before meeting her husband-to-be. As a teacher, she delivered lectures in one of the educational institutions in Truchtersheim. She was interested in local life, started getting involved into it and helped organise events in the area. In addition, Brigitte Macron ran for the city council of Truchtersheim, had a campaign, which involved the opening of a skate park, and promoted a programme of rent capping for young households.
Today the first lady is open to new horizons and opportunities. After having helped her husband, she is ready to realise her potential in politics.
