The number of women on leadership positions on the world political scene is growing. They inspire other women not to be afraid of setting challenging goals and reaching new heights. News agency of the Eurasian Women’s Community keeps on sharing about women leaders from different countries.

Christine Defraigne has been the President of the Senate of Belgium since 2014. She is a member of the Reformist Movement, a liberal political party. According to her, Belgium as a political centre of the European Union can reach a compromise in any controversial situation and find peaceful solutions of conflicts not only in the EU, but worldwide as well. That is why one can identify several main tasks in Ms. Defraigne’s activity: ensuring security and stability alongside with development of diplomatic relations with countries committed to open dialogue in foreign policy.

Today, it is important to remember that the history is cyclical. This means that many answers for questions we have today can be found in the past. The politician finds it important to avoid the same mistakes knowing what awful consequences they may have. That is why as the President of the Belgian Senate she not only supports but also personally takes part in events highlighting the darkest moments of the world history. For example, in November 2016, she visited Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex in Yerevan built to perpetuate the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. She placed a wreath at the Genocide Monument and left a note in the Memory Book of Honorable Guests of the Armenian Genocide Museum.

Ms. Defraigne proved herself to be an effective diplomat during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Belgium. The relations between China and Belgium started developing rapidly after the meetings of the two politicians. In May 2017, Christine Defraigne visited Beijing to boost win-win development of the two countries, She discussed with Yu Zhengsheng, Chinese politician, how to do that. In 2016, Ms. Defraigne visited Russia twice at the invitation of Valentina Matvienko, Chairperson of the Federation Council. Thanks to Ms. Defraigne’s efforts, Russia and Belgium have well-established interparliamentary contacts.

Christine Defraigne is a bright example demonstrating how much a politician can achieve if committed to open dialogue and mutually advantageous cooperation.
