GABRIELA CUEVAS BARRON: THE WOMAN WHO NOW HEADS THE IPU
The 137th IPU Assembly took place in Saint Petersburg. In terms of this event, a new President of the IPU was elected. The woman who now heads the Inter-Parliamentary Union is Gabriela Cuevas Barron, Mexico's parliamentarian. The EWC news agency analyzed Russian and international sources in order to find more information about her.
Gabriela Cuevas Barron from a young age was sincerely indifferent to the life of society. During her primary and secondary education, she went to a religious school and performed social work in nursing homes and health centres in poor rural areas. Having noticed the misuse of taxes taking place in one of them, she came to a conclusion that it was necessary to change the way politics was working. She decided to go in for political activities and change the life of society for the better. Gabriela started her career with education. She studied political science at the Autonomous Technical Institute of Mexico, attended courses and seminars on political interaction, public management and political theory in Mexico’s educational institutions and abroad.
At the age of 15, Gabriela Cuevas Barron entered the National Action Party (PAN). Already then, she knew that politics was her vocation. Taking different positions in the party, she gained a huge professional experience. Gabriela was not just an active member of the party, she rapidly developed in her political career. In her party, she changed several positions, each of them assumed a great responsibility. For example, she was Youth Secretary, Secretary General and President of the PAN Delegation Steering Committee in Miguel Hidalgo, National Counselor and Member of the National Executive Committee of the PAN, and so on. Later she took high positions in local and national government structures including the position of the Local Governor in Mexico City. Having a huge experience of more than 12 years working in the executive and legislative branches, she became a Mexican senator in 2012. Since 2012, she has been the Head of her country’s delegation to the IPU. As a member of the IPU, she pays much attention to such issues as supporting children, migrants, refugees and women as well as the programs of the sustainable development agenda.
She performed a significant work in the field of supporting foreigners traveling to Mexico in search of a better life. In the framework of the Forum of Presidents of Legislative Powers of Central America and Caribbean Basis, she presented a draft law supporting and protecting children and adolescents from migrant families. Today, thanks to her efforts, the Mexico City’s Constitution guarantees respecting and protecting the rights of persons who were granted asylum by the government. It is important to note that Gabriela is a supporter of international cooperation and a multilateral approach to solving the pressing problems of the modern world. The senator for some time served as the President of IPU's Committee to Promote Respect for International Humanitarian Law. In 2017 she became a member of the Working Group on Syria.
As a new President of the IPU, Gabriela Cuevas Barron is to solve a wide range of global issues. A significant part of its program is devoted to strengthening the potential and representation of women including those in the Inter-Parliamentary Union. In addition, one of the main principles of the IPU’s head is that a politician should be closer to the people in order to hear the voices of all layers of society.
In one of her interviews in the media, Gabriela stressed that politics is a very difficult field of activity. A politician can change the life of society for the better, but he or she has a great responsibility for the future changes.
“Sometimes it is difficult but there is always a goal to achieve. Politics is a good tool. We only have to use it properly to obtain the right goals”, she said.
According to her, politics is more about the significance and scope of the achievements, not about how difficult it was to obtain them.
In fact, Gabriela Cuevas Barron is the second woman to head the IPU during the whole period of its existence. Her presidency has a truly significant and symbolic character, as today one of the main activities of the IPU relates to women empowerment and involving them in politics. Gabriela Cuevas Barron, a wise woman and an experienced politician, like no one else can make a big contribution to the development in this direction.
