Galina Karelova, Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council, participated in yet another session of Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum held in Hanoi on 18-20 January 2018. The head of Russian delegation supposes, that “26th annual session of APPF contributed to the development of international women’s agenda”. 

According to her, Women Parliamentarians Meeting on the eve of the session had a very impactful atmosphere. Mrs. Karelova made a report, which acquainted all the participants with strong outcome of women’s segment of social politics’ in Russia alongside with the agenda of the Second Eurasian Women’s Forum, which is to be held in September in St. Petersburg. Olga Epifanova, Deputy Chairperson of State Duma also gave a report at the Meeting.


Galina Karelova said, that: “That is already the third meeting of women-parliamentarians. We observe the variety of discussed issues widening case by case. Participants trust one another more and more. New business relations arise alongside with cooperative projects”. 

Senator also said that amendments to APPF Charter were enacted after the Meeting. From now on, roundtable discussion of women-parliamentarians will be compulsory at annual sessions. 

Galina Karelova highlighted the amount of attention paid to women’s agenda throughout the session. According to her, Russia, Indonesia, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand proposed their draft resolutions on women’s role in the development of Asia-Pacific Region. The final resolution included invitation for AP women-parliamentarians to participate in the Second EWF, which will be held on 20-21 September in St. Petersburg. 

Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council emphasized effective cooperation with Vietnam, which paid much attention to collaboration with Russian delegation. Mrs. Karelova told about her meeting with Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, the head of Vietnamese parliament and leading Vietnamese parliamentarians. She thanked Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan for her will to participate in the Second EWF. 

The main topic of the Hanoi session of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum is ‘Parliamentary partnership for Peace, Innovation and Sustainable Development’. Delegations from 21 parliaments participated in it, including China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, etc. For the first time ever the delegation from IPU including the IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron from Mexico, IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong, and ex-president of IPU Saber Chowdhury from Bangladesh participated in APPF session. The upcoming 27th APPF session will be held in January 2019 in Cambodia.
