HORTENSE MARTINS ON PORTUGUESE WOMEN
It is impossible to underestimate the role of women in the development of society. However, today the status of women differs much across countries. Every state pursues its own policy regarding women. Within the framework of the 137th IPU Assembly in Saint Petersburg, the EWC journalists interviewed parliamentarians from many countries and found out their opinions on the role of women in political and public life in different countries and recent changes in the field mentioned. Hortense Martins, Member of the Assembly of the Republic in Portugal, Deputy Chairperson of the Finance Committee, shared interesting facts about the status of Portuguese women.
According to her, currently the Portuguese parliament has a relatively large number of women representatives. This was achieved thanks to committed government action and to the fact that the government realized the ability of women to contribute greatly to various fields of society. Thus, nowadays women parliamentarians address a wide range of issues including those in economy.
Hortense Martins stresses that her country pays much attention to addressing such issues, as violence against women and youth, women’s underrepresentation in IT sphere, robotics and other fields considered men’s ones. The speaker believes that these professions will be highly demanded in the future. That is why it is so important to attract more women to education in these fields.
One shouldn’t forget that the role of women in the society is as huge as in the family. According to Hortense Martins, it is important to create conditions for women not only to manage combining work and family obligations, but also to enforce the idea that both men and women should be guardians of the hearth.
