New Phase of Cooperation Between UNIDO and Russia

The Council of the Eurasian Women’s Forum and UNIDO discussed the development of women’s agenda

Moscow hosted the meeting of Galina Karelova Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council, members of The Council of the Eurasian Women’s Forum, and delegation of UNIDO headed by Li Yong, Director General of UNIDO. The Second Eurasian Women’s Forum was the starting point of the new phase of cooperation.

“UNIDO is our time-tested partner. Our interaction with it is successfully developing in a number of projects. We particularly appreciate our cooperation within the implementation of a thematic project focused on support of women’s leadership and entrepreneurship. Within modern economic circumstances and challenges, we see significant potential in our joint work”, emphasized Galina Karelova.

The Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council emphasized that the Second Eurasian Women’s Forum had broken new ground in terms of UNIDO and Russia’s collaboration in the field of women’s agenda development. The appointment of Veronika Peshkova as UNIDO Goodwill Ambassador took place within the Forum. In February 2019, Ms. Peshkova jointly with the Council of the Eurasian Women’s Forum presented Russia’s experience and initiatives in women’s economic empowerment at UNIDO Headquarters in Vienna. They were based on systemic approach to development of infrastructure of women’s entrepreneurship support and the usage of Russian and world practices.

“We highly appreciate cooperation with the Council in promotion of women’s opportunities in the entrepreneurial field”, commented Li Yong.

According to him, contributing to industrial development of countries Is one of the main tasks of UNIDO. In the first turn, much attention is paid to creation of employment for women and youth.

Within the meeting, the members of the Council of the Eurasian Women’s Forum, coordinators of projects on enhancement of women’s economic activity and development of leadership programmes, told about the work being done and opportunities to expand cooperation with UNIDO.

Today, the Council has 20 projects contributing to promotion of women’s participation in industry, digital economy, charity, international trade, and other relevant topics of women’s agenda.

“We see potential in all the Council’s functioning projects in terms of their further implementation jointly with UNIDO”, noted Galina Karelova.

Signing of the Joint Declaration of UNIDO and the Council of the Eurasian Women’s Forum took place as a result of the meeting.

Ms. Karelova expressed her confidence that the document would provide a further impetus to further collaboration. “Being a unique platform for presentation and promotion of initiative and projects in women’s interests, the Council of the Eurasian Women’s Forum can justly become Russia’s main conductor of UNIDO’s ideas on women’s agenda development”, finished the Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council.

Among other participants of the meeting were: Lyudmila Bokova, First Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council Committee for Constitutional Legislature and State Structure, Irina Gekht, Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council Committee for Agrarian and Food Policy and Environmental Management and supervisor of ‘Women in Development of Rural Areas’  project, Elena Perminova, Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council Committee for Budget and Financial Markets, Gulnaz Kadyrova, Russia’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade and supervisor of ‘Women for Sustainable Industrial Development’ project, Nadiya Cherkasova, Chairperson of OPORA RUSSIA’s Committee for Development of Women’s Entrepreneurship and supervisor of ‘Development of Women's Entrepreneurship’ project, Irina Gaida, head of Oil&Gas practice in PricewaterhouseCoopers Strategy and supervisor of ‘Women’s Leadership’ project, and representatives of entrepreneurial community.
