SESSION OF THE IPA CIS COUNCIL
A session of the Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States (IPA CIS Council) with the involvement of the heads of the Assembly’s parliamentary delegations took place in Saint Petersburg. Valentina Matvienko, Chairperson of the Federation Council, hosted the meeting.
The Council members considered a number of issues regarding the Assembly’s activity and the organisation’s Secretariat. They summed up the results of IPA’s work in 2017 and discussed the agenda for the coming period.
Vladimir Andreychenko, Chairperson of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus, reported on the subject of the Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council. He proposed to appoint Valentina Matvienko to this position and stressed her huge contribution to international cooperation and raising the Assembly’s authority.
Valentina Matvienko was unanimously elected the Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council again. Yuri Osipov was appointed the Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council.
Galina Karelova, Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council, told about the preparation of the Second Eurasian Women’s Forum to be held in Tauride Palace on September 20-21, 2018. The event will take place under the aegis of the Federation Council and the IPA CIS. The main topic of the Forum, as stated by Galina Karelova, is called ‘Women for Global Security and Sustainable Development’. The senator informed all those present that the Organising Committee had already approved the Forum’s draft programme. There will be 35 discussion platforms dedicated to opportunities and status of women in politics, economy, development of human capital, ensuring environmental security, development of global health agenda, digital technologies, expansion of international cooperation, and other fields.
Galina Karelova thanked IPA delegates for their effective cooperation in terms of women’s agenda. According to her, their CIS colleagues formulated a number of the Forum’s topics. The senator invited women parliamentarians to join the Forum, particularly, the international dialogue that would include discussion of political, economic, and social changes affecting global security and stability.
She is looking forward to IPA CIS Council’s support of the forthcoming Forum. “We hope that the Forum will result in mitigation of the acute political issues. We hope that it will unify the women’s global community and contribute to constructive international cooperation”, she said.
