Summit of W20 in Argentina: How It Was
Final meeting of 2018
W20 annually holds summits in different countries that are the members of organization. November 20, 2018 was the day of handover of the Presidency of Women 20 – W20 from Argentina to Japan. The meeting was held in CCK – Kirshner Cultural Center – in Buenos Aires.
Within the meeting, there were several panels with the world leaders on gender issues. Phumzile Miambo Ngcuka, the Executive Director of UN Women; Gabriela Ramos, the Chief of Staff and Sherpa of OECD; Irene Natividad, the President of GlobeWomen Research and Education Institute; Lilianne Ploumen, Member of the Parliament of the Netherlands, Svetlana Lukash, the Russian G20 Sherpa from the Presidential Executive Office were among speakers. Other competent participants also had the opportunity to tell about successful practices.
The speakers asked the leaders of G20 countries to enhance and raise women’s economic and social status for the economic enhancement in the respective countries.
Gülden Türktan expressed her great appreciation and gratitude to Susana Balbo, the Chair of W20 Argentina and her capable team for their great job. The speaker mentioned that Juliana Awada, First Lady of Argentina, had provided substantial support to the organisation. She hosted the W20 meeting in Davos, she hosted the heads of delegation at the Presidential Palace in Buenos Aires, she was at the handover from W20 Germany to W20 Argentina. She was at the opening ceremony of the W20 summit. According to Ms. Türktan one of the best memorable moments of Buenos Aires was the time they spend at the Presidential Palace with the heads of delegation of Japan and Germany as well as Argentina.
President of Argentina, Mauricio Macri himself came to the W20 summit to pick up the W20 Communique from Susana Balbo.
In his speech, he declared that women’s labor force participation and economic inclusion constitute opportunities for better economic performance of the G20 countries. He also gave an indication that they will continue to follow up the labor, financial and rural inclusion of women in Argentina.
Rural women as a topic was first mentioned in the Communique of W20 Turkey in 2015, however it is still relevant. W20 Argentina focused its attention on that topic.
Participants from different countries shared their experience in realisation of projects and told inspiring stories about rural women who had achieved great success in their activity.
On November 20, 2018, which was the day of handover of W20 Presidency from Argentina to Japan, the representative of Japan spoke. According to her, it is important to pay more attention to issues related to wellness, safety, and happiness of society and balance between life and work. Women can solve those problems and make a great contribution to the world’s economic prosperity and sustainability.
