What was at the conference «Russia – EU: Dialogue on Social Partnership and CSR»?
Nowadays corporative social responsibility of business gets more and more popular in the whole world, including Russia. Why do companies, which are aimed at profit, need to help people and improve ecology? The conference «Russia – EU: Dialogue on Social Partnership and CSR», which took place on the 22nd of May in Moscow, was dedicated to this topics.
Companies with CSR do not only lose their profit, but on the contrary, increase it. In modern world it’s not enough to produce a qualified product, you need to communicate with people, get to know their problems and help in finding solutions to them. It is an international practice which proved itself. For recent two years due to CSR the amount of assets of European organizations increased by 25%. People choose those goods, which are produced by companies that have corporative social responsibility.
In a number of European countries for development of CSR organizations use the strategy of «excluding screening». It is based on this method: a company stops investing such assets that do not meet specific requirements. Thus, 3500 power supply companies decided to stop investing in construction of coal mines. This decision should be considered not as a business element, but as a demonstration of corporative social responsibility which unites the priorities of development of a company, state and society.
Although at the conference there were discussions that were mainly dedicated to CSR of business, speakers insisted that noncommercial organizations should have corporative social responsibility as well, because NCOs work with actual social problems, they have methods of their solution but don’t have resources (money and people). Business knows about social problems less than they do, because it does not work with them every day, but it has resources. Corporation of NCOs and business is an opportunity to maintain wide and strong partnership relations and efficiently help those who need it, improve the settlement and develop ecological environment.
Without NCOs business can bring not social benefit, but social harm. For example, our country’s big companies give a huge amount of presents to orphanages every year. Noncommercial organizations have been asking them not to do it for a long time, because due to this orphans have dependent moods. «90% of children (a terrific number!) do not socialize after the orphanage. It shows that we didn’t build social programs in a proper way. Money should be aimed at support of crisis families, employment of children after the orphanage, assistance to foster families and other useful projects», - thinks Svetlana Gerasimova, Director of MIRBIS Partner Projects Department.
Noncommercial organizations should clearly understand the aims of business, and business should know the aims and tasks of the state. Business will be doing work which is included in its interests’ zone, and interests tend to change, while social problems call for long-term intervention. We can’t immediately or in a single fee solve the problem of employment of people with Down’s syndrome, for example. Partnership of the state, business, NCOs and citizens themselves allows building a long-term strategy of social help. In this way, a basis for the dialogue and right social planning will appear.
A topic about the need of creating a register of organizations which work with CSR was also mentioned during the conference. A single base will allow all participants to track which social programs were already launched and are actively being realized, which need support and which need to be launched.
The common conclusion of the meeting is: being a good person becomes a beneficial task – for common people, business and the state as well. Global changes are that companies without CSR leave the market. And if at the beginning of the XXI century the society was named «the general consumption’s society», now this consumption becomes conscious, aimed at solving social problems. For humanity this ideological term is a real good. CSR becomes important, if not a key element for a civil society.
