WOMEN’S ASPECT IN RUSSIAN SCIENCE AND SOCIETY’S PROGRESS
It is peculiar for human to generate ideas regardless of a person’s sex. There are no gender differences in science. Irina Urmina, head of museum-exhibition group of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, thinks that, perhaps, genetic traits of reflective activities aimed at preservation and creation help women better work in the sphere of science. In addition, Irina was a moderator of Natural Sciences section of recent Women’s Perspective on the Development of Russia roundtable. We asked her whether the women and science need each other.
The research shows that only 3% of all people produce knowledge. Of course, there are women among them. According to Irina, women not only inspire men to work but also do everyday household activities. For example, wives of famous scientists who supported their husbands in everything they did. Such women often are good scientists themselves.
Irina Urmina mentioned Olga Mechnikova, wife of Ilya Mechnikov. He was a Russian Nobel laureate in the sphere of Physiology and Medicine that laid foundation of modern research in the sphere of immunology. Olga designed demonstration posters based on science drawings of her husband. The Archive keeps those posters now.
Irina thinks that the necessity of solving different problems by women is some kind of trigger that calls them to participate in transforming society more actively.
Irina participated in activities of Institute of Socio-Economic Problems of population of the RAS and can firmly say: feminism is not possible in Russia because here everyone is equal by law. There occurs a question. Do countries where women do not have all the rights and opportunities yield in social development?
“I know India well. That is a wonderful country with developed women’s movement. However, the gender ratio is very specific there. It raises the question whether Indian women can change something in science because first they have to do household activities. I think that women in civilised countries have more opportunities to work in the sphere of science”, says Irina Urmina.
The role of information and mass media is very important nowadays. According to Irina, there will be no progress until we learn to think positively and substantively.
By comparing Russia and India, we can say that Russian women live much more comfortable lives. In different countries, women take part in solving problems. That is how they contribute to positive changes in all spheres of life. Thus, it is important to talk about women’s aspect in progress of our society.
